Cord Blood donation & public banking: some Frequently Asked Questions

The Freiburg University Medical Center operates one of six German cord blood banks, i.e. centers where donated cord blood is registered and stored for further use.

Why are cord blood cells useful?
Cord blood contains so-called stem cells, like the ones found in bone marrow. These stem cells are able to develop into different blood cell types, like red or white blood cells and platelets. Stem cells from cord blood preparations can be used to overcome leukemias and other types of hematopoietic diseases.

Who can donate cord blood?
In general, every pregnant woman who is healthy and of full age. Although there are some reasons for exclusion of public banking, like HIV or HCV infection. Detailed information will be provided on request.

Can I donate cord blood in every hospital?
No, cord blood donations, like blood donations are legally handled as medicinal products, that means respective laws and guidelines are applicable (German Drug Law, Transfusion Law). We are holding a production license which includes the location of donation (i.e. birth clinic). We need to have a contract with every cooperating birth clinic, assuring proper training of personnel and proper handling of the donated material.

Therefore only contracted birth clinics are able to accept and process cord blood donations. In Germany, apart from Freiburg, the following cord blood centers are operating: Dresden, Düsseldorf, Heidelberg, Mannheim, München.

For the Freiburg cord blood bank, the following hospitals are currently contracted as cooperation partners (Jan. 2008):
